This Saturday night, one of Philly's all time pound for pound best Bernard Hopkins (48-5, 32ko's) goes at it again, this time taking on undisputed Middleweight champ Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik (34-0, 30ko's) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The 43 year old Hopkins looks to pull off another shocker, taking a fight where many think he is the underdog while Pavlik looks to get that signature win on a resume which includes a lot of very good, but no great fighters. Last time B-Hop came to the casinos, he was in the same spot and pulled off a one sided win over then Light Heavyweight champ Antonio Tarver. In his most recent fight, B-Hop lost a decision to the undefeated Joe Calzaghe in a fight that was close but down right boring. Pavlik, who hails from Youngstown Ohio, stormed onto the national scene in 2007 with big knockouts and eventually capturing the middleweight title with a KO win over Jermain Taylor. Some say Pavlik is the future, some say Hopkins is on the downslide. One thing we have learned over the years is to never underestimate the Germantown native. He has a history of beating the odds as he went from unknown to setting the record for most consecutive title defenses in the middleweight division with 20. Since losing the belts to Jermain Taylor in 2005, he has lost 3 of his last 5 bouts though all were close and could have gone either way. A win here would be huge and probably set up a mega fight with Roy Jones Jr. A loss probably will be the final chapter in a long, storied career of a great Philadelphia fighter. The card will be televised on HBO PPV and has a pretty good televised undercard. Philly prospect Danny Garcia (7-0, 6ko's) fights on the untelevised portion and looks to build on his reputation of being one of the best young prospects in the welterweight division. You can get tickets at here which range anywhere from $100 - $700.

vs. After a stint in the 'burbs Power Productions returns home to Philly at The Legendary Blue Horizon on October 17th with a card featuring the new USBA regional Jr. Welterweight Champion Tyric "Too" Sweet" Robinson (9-2 -1, 3ko's) who is now said to fight Jason Cintron (8-0, 2ko's) of Reading. Too Sweet, when on his game, has shown flashes of a top flight boxer who could test anyone in this town in that weight class. Cinton has good boxing bloodlines as he is the brother of former IBF welterweight champ Kermit Cintron and he is also trained by Marshall Kauffman. The co-feature is getting the most chatter as Mayfair's Tony "Boom Boom" Ferrante goes in against South Philly's Simon "One Punch" Carr in a 6 rounder. Carr's motto since being a pro has been "redemption". Outside of the ring, he has been successfully thus far, establishing himself as a business minded entrepreneur and as far as I know a model citizen after a long stretch in state prison. In the ring, he is in need of a win and he feels this fight with Ferrante is exactly what will get him back on track. On the other hand, Ferrante's handlers are expecting to win convincingly. Is the rugged Philly fight veteran being badly underestimated? Is the young upstart from Northeast Philly as good as a lot of people think he is? This one is very interesting, check in on the 17th to see how it all goes down! Also on the card is North Philly's ReShawn Scott vs. the undefeated Garrett Wilson in cruiserweight action. Win or lose, Scott comes to fight so this might be good. Also slated for action is Ishmaer Ra, Coy Evans & Christina Leadbeater in separate bouts. Get your tickets by calling 215-668-5915.

Philly's lone world boxing champion Steve "USS" Cunningham recently announced that he will defend his IBF Cruiserweight title against Poland's Tomas Adamek in Newark, NJ on December 11th. The card will be a dual promotion put together by Main Events and Don King Productions and will be televised around the world on the Versus network. For those who don't know, Cunningham puts the W in world champion. Fearless of foreign lands, he has traveled the globe to win and successfully defend the strap. Despite his on going success, his talents have been all but ignored by the major networks until now. In Cunningham's last outing, he traveled to Germany and knocked out hometown #1 contender Marco Huck in the 12th round with a vicious uppercut, leaving no chance of getting shafted on the scorecards.

Though Newark is close enough to Cunningham's home of Philadelphia, he plays the role of outsider again as the Polish fight fans come in flocks and have no problem making he trip from North Jersey and NYC to support their guy. Adamek, a former champion in the 175lb division has been campaigning as a Cruiserweight for a year now. After a few warm-up bouts, he went on to makes former Cruiserweight champ O'Neill Bell look like a shot fighter, making him quit on the stool after 8 rounds in their title elimination match.

The winner of this fight will certainly be recognized as "the man" in the Cruiserweight division. Adamek has been in a few classics in his day and USS is one of the hardest working fighters in the business. Newark isn't too far away, buy a ticket and support our local fighter by calling 201-507-8900

On of Philly's most dangerous journeyman, Dhafir "No Fear" Smith looks to pull off the upset again, this time in Newark, NJ when he faces former Olympian Jerson Ravelo on October 22nd. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he loses but lately Smith has seemed rededicated and put on quite a few good performances in 2007 which included winning the a  version of the WBF Light Heavyweight title in North Carolina. Ravelo was a one time hot prospect but injuries and losses when he stepped up the competition have been big setbacks during his run to the top. This could be a good fight, hopefully www.gofightlive.tv picks this card up.

Peltz Boxing returns to The New Alhambra on November 14th, this time in association with Bob Arm's Top Rank boxing for a night which will bring in a few outsiders who are within sniffing distance of the gold in their respective divisions. In the main event, San Antonio's Raul Martinez (23-0, 23ko's) will face Mexico's Victor Proa (26-0-2, 19ko's) in a 10 round bout pitting two highly regarded super flyweights against each other.  Martinez is ranked by all the world boxing sanctioning bodies, Proa is knocking on the door and with a win is guaranteed a spot in the top 15. The co-feature Alexis Camacho (16-1, 15ko's) of Austin, TX will take on serviceable journeyman Edvan Barrios (9-5-1, 7ko's) of Florida. Camacho was last seen on ESPN hugging air against Terrance Cauthan, while Barrios has in the past gone the distance with title contenders Mike Alvarado and Luis Collazo in losing efforts.

The undercard will have a lot of familiar faces with rising local super bantamweight Teon Kennedy (10-0, 5ko's) returning to face Felipe Almanza (12-14-2, 6ko's), a Columbian roughneck who has lost 2 of his last 3 by DQ. If anything, we can probably expect this guy to try to make a street fight with "The Technician". Also scheduled for action are Kenzington's Dennis Hasson, North Philly's Anthony Flores and the return of the boxing barber, Victor Vasquez, all of whom still have open contracts at the moment. Get your tickets by calling 215-765-0922 or visiting www.peltzboxing.com where you can also check out the new DVD collection sale under the FIGHTS link.

Ringside reports and photos

It was Irish night at The National Guard Armory and promoter Tom Moran, leader of Philly Worldwide presented a European look in a very successful promotional debut on a night which featured a former world champion, two fighters with international titles and a few locals who wanted an opportunity to make a name for themselves. The main event featured former former Jr. Middleweight titlist Kassim Ouma vs. Martinus Clay with Ouma grinding out a 6th round TKO win. In the co-feature, Reading's Lucian Gonzales pulled off a shocker, accepting the assignment on less than 8 hours notice and defeated Irelands super bantamweight champion Paul Hyland by unanimous decision in a very exciting 4 round fight. Middleweight "Slick" Simon O'Donnell scored the knockout of the night when he buried Antonio Baker with a counter right hand at the :58 mark of round 5 in what was until that point a pretty close and rough house battle. Ireland featherweight Patrick Hylan completely outclassed the Dominican Republic's Elvis Martinez and scored a knockout at the 1:24 mark of round 2, sealing the deal with a hard, straight left hand. Philly middleweight Jamaal "Da Truth" Davis was finally given a chance to fight at home again and made the most of it with a one sided unanimous decision win over Chris Hall. Through all four rounds, Davis was in control and showed the toughness which makes him an avoided fighter amongst many more protected fighters in his weight class. In the opener, The consensus was that Julias Edmounds clearly won three of the four rounds against Tim Witherspoon Jr, only to lose by majority decision on the scorecards. "Fast" Eddie Chambers returned to Philly and scored 5th round knockout over veteran Livan Castillo in his tune up fight at The Legendary Blue Horizon this past Friday night. Chambers, ranked #7 in the IBF, started a bit slow but by round 3 was in complete control using the ring and landing at will showing off his unmatched hand speed. Castillo was game early and tried to bring the fight to Chambers but before long this turned out to be a glorified sparring session. At the end of the 5th, Chambers began to unload with rights and lefts to the point where Castillo could not fire back leaving the referee no choice but to wave it off at the 2:59 mark. With the win, Fast Eddie stays in position to land a significant national bout in an open heavyweight division. In the co-feature, Philly's Darren Fallen won a close split decision over Carlos Pena of Florida in a 6 rounder where the action was sparce. The styles just seemed to clash as both were southpaws and both were only able to create opportunities when the other took the initiative to start the action. It was close through 4 but Fallen switched it up a bit late in the fight, moving and jabbing which was enough to secure the last two rounds and the W. Queens, NY super featherweight Joselito Collado went to war with Atlanta's David Orosco in a very entertaining 4 rounder where both men went toe to toe throughout. Orosco showed he has tons of heart but also got hit with some bombs while fighting in the trenches. Collado also took quite a few shots but responded well and continued to be the aggressor until the final bell sounded. Sweden's Anna Ingram won all 6 rounds convincingly in her fight against Kimberly Harris of Florida. Ingram had a traditional European look but was vey sound and steady in this fight. Patterson NJ Feathwerweight Carlos Zambrano was impressive in his win over a very technically sound  Rasool Shakur in a 4 rounder. Speed was the difference maker here and Zambrano was firing off some beauties to the body which created openings upstairs. In the opener, Orlando's Donta Woods left hooked his way to a 3rd round KO over Shawn Guzman of Atlanta. Guzman showed a ton of heart but never made adjustments, being dropped 3 times, all by left hooks. The card was brought to you by matchmaker Don Elbaum and promoter Vernoca L. Michael. Joey Eye Boxing came to The National Guard Armory and on this night, the Philly fight scene jack of all trades delivered a card that featured two good PA state titles fights which followed an undercard that made the EMT's earn their paycheck. In the main event, West Philly's Yusef Mack punched his way back into world title contention with a thudding TKO over North Philly's Omar Pittman in the 6th round of their NABA & PA Light heavyweight state title match. In the co-feature, Jr. Middleweight Derek "Pooh" Ennis, played the matador and threw a near shut out the big hearted old bull Troy Browning to become the 154 lb divisions PA State & USBA regional champion. The undercard was a wild one and it was led by West Chester Heavyweight Anthony Gatt picking himself up off the canvas in the second round to pound out a close unanimous decision win over Jonathan Felton. It wasn't very pretty but it was pretty damn entertaining as these two slugged away at each other.  Heavyweight Tyyab Beale scored a KO win, Featherweight Jules Blackwell returned to blow out his opponent with a1st round KO and Joel De La Paz starched an opponent who should have never been allowed to lace them up :29 into the 1st round. Full write up & photos are in, click here

They were fighting again at The Legendary Blue Horizon to the tune of a six bout card which pitted a lot of local fighters against each other. The end result was a very good night of professional boxing as every match had moments which put the crowd on their feet. In the main event, Philly's "Showtime" Steve Chambers overcame a slow start that included being on the wrong end of a second round knockdown, only to rally down the stretch to win a unanimous decision over Philly's well traveled veteran Kevin Carmody in an 8 round junior welterweight match up. Coming into this fight, many were expecting a strategic chess match, instead most of this fight was spent in the wheel house with both fighters throwing shots with intentions of knocking the other man out. The co-feature could have been titled "A Matter of Respect" and Israel's Ran Nakash earned his in dramatic fashion when he KO'd the big punching Larry Robinson at the :50 second mark of round number one. These two wasted no time getting to know each other as Robinson looked to make a war of it from the opening bell. Not long after a clean, powerful short right hand from Nakash stopped Robinson in his tracks and sent him down. Robinson did beat the 10 count but referee Eddie Cotton rightly determined that the fight should not continue. Welcome to the Philly top 10 list Ran Nakash. The fight of the night was an 8 round Super Middleweight war between Philly natives Gee Culmer and Jameel "Black Gold" Wilson which saw Culmer get the nod by majority decision. Culmer looked very sharp early, boxing circles around Wilson at the start but Black Gold, true to his form, warmed up as the fight went on and made things very interesting going into the final rounds. Culmer was more active through out, Wilson landed some of the harder punches of the night and finished very strong. This was a good, tough fight which stayed at a steady pace from rounds 1 - 8 and could have gone either way. After this fight, the fans catching a smoke were heard buzzing about how good this one turned out. "Dangerous" Darrell Jones looked good in his pro debut scoring a 3rd round knockout and could be a fighter worth keeping an eye on as the year winds down. Derek Bivins won a 4 round unanimous decision in his pro debut over the always willing to fight Darrell Martin. New Yawker William Jeter scored crushing 3rd round KO win in his first appearance at The Blue.

Power Productions returned to the Cisco Arena located in Oaks, PA this Friday with a 6 fight card that was highlighted by Eric "Outlaw" Hunter of West Philly outclassing Rhode Island's Robert Deluz over 8 one sided rounds. The crowd got a little restless near the end pleading for more action and Hunter obliged scoring two of his three total knockdowns last in the final round, the first coming with a picture perfect counter left hook as Deluz tried to knock his head off with a wide overhand right. Deluz got up but was sent back down soon after courtesy of a three punch combo. Again, Deluz beat the count and this time lasted until the final bell to no avail as all three judges scored  the fight heavily in favor of Eric Hunter who improves to 10 - 1. On the under card, New Castle, DE's Ryan Belasco again showed up with a full tank of gas and went a strong 6 round route to take a one sided unanimous decision over Justin Danforth of Wisconsin.  Jesus Barbosa fought through a cut on his hairline to win a tough majority decision over Keywayne Hill in what turned out to be the best two way action fight of the night.  In womens action Tracey Hunt won a unanimous decision over Christina Leadbetter in a four rounder. Ronson Frank came in from New York and impressively picked apart Earl Doe before knocking him out at 1:54 of the 5th round. Travis "The Animal" Thompson and Corey McCants fought to draw in a mundane four rounder. In the opener, Joselito Candelitto was given a duck and shot it down in the first round improving to 4 - 0. More to come with some photos soon.

Power Productions returned to the National Guard Armory and this 5 fight card came as advertised, leaving many in attendance saying "now that is Philly boxing" after this very entertaining card . In the first of three title fights Tyric "Too Sweet Robinson rose to the occasion and defeated Lenny DeVictoria by way of unanimous decision to become the new USBA regional Jr Welterweight champion.  In the 2nd title fight, Rasheem Brown cruised through the first three rounds, but then all hell broke loose as he and Jameel Wilson went toe to toe and blow for blow in an early candidate for Philly Fight of the Year. In the Main Event, Mexico's Jose Hernandez came to Philly with a full tank of diesel fuel and scored a big upset over the previously undefeated Rasheim Jefferson to become the new USBA featherweight champion. On the under card Tony Ferrante KO'd Ray Ruiz in the 2nd round with a nasty straight right, leaving him out on the canvas for more than 5 minutes. Hopefully the Ruiz is ok. "The New" Ray Robinson scored 3 knockdowns in the first on Jason Jordan but the rugged journeyman was able to last the distance only to lose a very lopsided decision. Click here for my full recap and to leave a comment, we also called in "The Hatchet" Charles Brewer to give his championship perspective, click here to read the Hatchet blow by blow report. The photos are finally in, I apologize for the delay.

At the Legendary Blue Horizon, Joey Abell gave some payback when he knocked Maurice Wheeler out of the ring at the end of the second round to secure his 20th win as a pro and a house full of fans chanting "Joey, Joey, Joey". Amazingly enough seconds after this KO of the Year candidate, Gerald "The Jedi" Nobels stormed the ring and claimed he wants next. Joey responded by saying "you can get it too if you really want it" Hook it up Elbaum! In the co-feature, Gee Cullmer squeaked out a majority decision win over the known spoiler Mustapha Johnson in their 6 round middleweight fight.  Ecuadorian middleweight Mario Mina made a statement in his pro debut with a huge knockout win over a very tough Pedro Calla of Peru in what turned out to be the best fight of the night. Philly's Gerald Smith turned in his second strong outing at The Blue, this time battering Jose Guerrido around the ring til that corner threw in the towel in round 2. Swedish meatball Anders Holmberg was dropped in the 1st but got up and scored a fishy 2nd round KO Archie Hopkins. Investigations are pending..... Showtime Steve Chambers capped off the night with a win over Jean Petit of Haiti in what was a pretty wild fight and had the ladies screaming "Showtiiiiiiiime". Osvaldo Rivera, Joel De La Paz & Calvin Goldwire all won by decision. Simon "One Punch" Carr's official fight fell out but he hung around to put on an exhibition with Tommie "Big Poppa" Speller. The write up and most pictures are in, click here to read and leave a comment

Boxing’s “The All-American Prizefighter” Rob Calloway (74-7-1, 58 KOs), of St. Joseph’s, Missouri strengthened his position as a cruiserweight contender in all 4 organizations with a sensational 9th round knockout at 3:05 of the round over previously unbeaten Juan Carlos Robles (9-1, 4 KOs), Waynesboro, Virginia.  A 4 round middleweight match had Charlottesville, Virginia’s George Rivera (8-1, 3 KO’s) a winner over late substitute Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor (12-14, 6 KOs), New Castle, Delaware, due to a very good left jab.  Judges Weisfeld and Gross had it 39-37 with LaRosa at 40-36.  Referee was Rosato. Jesus Barbosa (3-0-1, 3 KOs), Philadelphia, used a Tyson-like style to come back in the 2nd round after having his hands full in the first with the taller Shavaris Buie (0-4), Brooklyn, NY.  Referee Rosato called a halt to this featherweight match at the end of the round when Buie complained of an injured hand. Ken Hissner was ringside read his full report here.

The conditions outdoors in the Tri-State area were were cold, rainy and flat out miserable this past Friday night. While most would prefer to stay inside on an evening like this, the Philly fight fans weathered the storm to create a sold out, jam packed audience at The New Alhambra. In the ring, the main event of the evening was a rematch between NABF featherweight champion Rogers "The Tiger" Mtagwa of South Philly via Tanzania and Aldo Valtierra of Mexico who looked to settle some unfinished business from their tight knit affair from the summer of 2007. In the co-feature, undefeated featherweight Teon Kennedy of North Philly was making the leap to 8 round status against this toughest opponent to date in Castulo Gonzalez of Lynn, MA. The under card had a 6 rounder  with Victor Vasquez taking of Rami Ibraham of the Oven Gym, Travis "The Animal" Thompson took on Emmanuel Rosas and three former Golden Gloves champions in Anthony Flores, Dennis Hasson and Perdo Martinez all made their pro debuts in separate bouts. Click here to read what happened on the corner of Swanson & Ritner on March 7, 2008.

On February 15, 2008 Big Box Promotions & Fighting City Productions collaborated for a 5 fight card at The Commerce Bank Arts Centre in Sewell, NJ. Controversy surrounded the card and the original line-up was changed at the last minute but in the end, it was Eric “Murder” Mitchell of Philadelphia who stepped in on less than one day notice and showed a lot of grit as he shook off  1 ½ years of ring rust to earn a razor thin, 10 round unanimous decision over Edwin Vasquez to claim the vacant IBC Americas light middleweight title. In the co-feature, “The Gentleman” Chazz Witherspoon started slow but finished fast scoring a TKO in the 4th over Jonathan Haggler of South Carolina. Jesus Barbosa of Philly scored three knockdowns in the 1st round, two with hard left hooks to the body and following up with a crushing left hook to the ear of Melvin McGuire to seal the deal at 2:16 of the round. On paper it looked like a dud but the end result was a decent night of pro boxing at The Legendary Blue Horizon courtesy of Don Elbaum & Vernoca Michaels. In the main event, Lenny DeVictoria hits the .500 mark as he earned a unanimous decision win in a tough fight over fellow journeyman Derreck Moon. In the co-feature, Gee Cullmer persecuted John "The Baptist" Terry over 6 rounds en route to a unanimous decision win. Gee was more talented but I'll give it to this Terry kid, he comes to fight despite his record. Ran Nakash stays undefeated with a 2nd round TKO over Rey Ruiz. Samir the Pharoah & Julias Edwards win their pro debut. Tex Cobb is given a 10 minute standing ovation as he presented his diploma from Temple University.  Read all about it here.

Power Productions kicks off the 2008 fight season on January 25th with a good card at The Blue Horizon but the proposed main event between Chucky Cavallo vs. Jameel Wilson was axed at the last minute by Greg Serb due to a sports hernia suffered by Cavallo. In the new main event, we found out that Rasheem Brown is back in town and he scored a hard 3rd round knockout win over Jose "El Macho" Medina on Friday nights Power Productions show.  Jason Jordan upsets Tyric Robinson, Oaktree Brown dispatches Kevin Hood in the first, Farah Khalil wins a verynarrowdecision over Juergan Hartenstein in a good fight. Jesus Barbosa and Rami Ibraham let the leather fly in a draw, Tony Ferrante makes it 2 in a row with a win over Camron Bright, Hammerin Hank Lundy's quest to bring the hardware back home to Philly continues with a win over Damon Antoine. Full write up is in, more pictures to follow very soon of a good night of boxing at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

Lenny DiVictoria wrapped up the Philly 2007 boxing season with a fight of the year performance as he knocked out Elad Schmouel in the 6th in a great 2 way action bout.  Both fighters gave it their all but only one was left standing over 6 rounds of junior welterweight action. In the co-feature, Jules Blackwell earned ranking on the next pound for pound list with a hard fought win over Paul Fernandez in a match up of unbeaten featherweight prospects. Gee Cullmer once again pounded out a victory, this time over South Carolina's Marcus Brooks by majority decision. Now with 12 wins under his belt, Gee has to considered among the top local middleweights in the area. The under card was focused on the new comers and Luis Castro did have a nice showing against an extremely determined, yet outgunned Conrado Garcia and more Click here for the full write up and pictures from the Blue Horizon

On the same night in at the Hockensin PAL, Ken Hissner reports that Dave "TNT" Tiberi  and the First State Boxing Series also had great main event  with Tony Baker pulling a slim upsets over Richard Stewart in a hotly contested two way thriller which saw an early knockdown and a late surge. On the undercard Philly's Teon Kennedy stayed undefeated with a decision win over Arthur Parker and The Contender Aaron Torres out hustled Jesse Williams to earn a unanimous decision to make it two wins in a row. Peltz Boxing returned to the New Alhambra and Mike Jones was awesome in the 3rd round scoring a fiery TKO at the 1:44 mark over Pito Cardona.
