This will likely be the last appearance from Harry Yorgey who is hitting the Boardwalk in Atlantic City later this month in preparation for making the jump to the top tier. The same goes for Max Alexander who is set to be one of 16 fighters featured on ESPN's The Contender, Season 3. While some of our favorites are going, this opens the door for the next wave of hopefuls looking to go the Eddie Chambers route and do big things in the sport of boxing. This month we welcome three new faces this month and one returning member to the top 10 after good performances in or around our area. They are here now but the seats aren't safe. Joey Abell is said to be returning to Philly as well as Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor to defend his version of the WBC title. Simon Carr is looking to make a big statement as he returns to the ring later this month too. Teon Kennedy, Simon O'Donnell and other are close to hitting the 5 fight limit too so things could get interesting quick. Gabby Rosado was impressive in his latest fight and with another solid outing he also forces the issue. For those who aren't familiar with this list, the rules are simple. The fighter does not have to be born in Philly but has to fight on the Philly circuit and beat worth while fighters. There is a 5 win minimum and you must have been active within the past three months. To those of you who want to beef about not having guys like Bernard Hopkins on the list, I have that covered too with the top 10 Philly born national pound for pound list. As always, this is up for debate and your feedback is appreciated so hit me with an email giving your 2 cents.

![]() "Lightning" Harry Yorgey Jr. Middleweight 19 - 0 - 1 (9ko’s) |
Harry Joe retains the top slot with a good outing at The Legendary Blue
Horizon in June taking a one sided unanimous decision over Edson Aguirre
live on Comcast. Yorgey did his thing as usual, giving the crowd their
moneys worth with 8 rounds of aggressive behavior and rocking Aguirre's
chin on multiple occasions to the delight of the crowd. Up next for the
Bridgeport native is a fight in Atlantic City on August 31st against an
opponent to be announced shortly. The card is slated to be promoted by
Warriors boxing and will be shown on ESPN's Friday Night Fights although
it is unclear at the moment if Harry's fight will be aired. If the suits
know what is best for their ratings, they will clip Juan Urango and put
on the Bridgeport Brawler. Either way, with a win it looks like the
Yorgey show will go on the road for good after this one and I will be
looking for a new number 1.

![]() Mike "Machine Gun" Jones Welterweight 9 - 0 (9ko's) |
On July 20th, Mike Jones was considered a good, yet untested prospect who
was exciting to watch. On the 21st, he took a big step up and scored the
most important win of his career with a 3rd round TKO over Doel
Carrasquillo at the New Alhambra. The was a big buzz with the ringsiders
coming into this fight and while the hard hitting Carrasquillo did get
in a few good punches, it was the Mike Jones show throughout, proving he
is more than capable of taking on high caliber opponents and getting his
usual result of a knockout. There doesn't seem to be anyone left in this
area to push the Machine Gun past 3 rounds, so what's up next for the
Mt. Airy powerhouse? Maybe dip south of the border to bring in a steel
chinned Mexican fighter? Maybe it will be a fight for the state title
which he mentioned is one of his immediate goals. Whoever it is, it
would be nice to see Jones go a few extra rounds to show off his overall
skills. While he is known for his right that keeps medical on standby,
he was showing off a pretty damn good jab early in the Carrasquillo
fight too. You can next catch Jones at The New Alhambra on October 5th
again fighting under the Peltz Boxing banner in a scheduled 8 rounder. Last Month Ranking - #3 |

Derek Ennis
|
Derek Ennis returned home to Philly in April
and has quickly dispatched of 2 opponents putting his name back on the
map as a high quality Jr. Middleweight prospect. In his first fight back
at the Armory, Ennis busted up a tough enough customer in Edgar Reyes
making him quit on the stool after the 3rd. He most recently fought that
The Blue on June 1, making an easy night out of Mike McGuire scoring and
early 1st round knockout. After mopping the ring with C level talent,
Ennis steps it up on August 24th at The New Alhambra taking on the more
experienced Dennis Sharpe, a one time prospect who started out his
career 17 - 0 but has fallen on some hard times lately as he now takes
on only the best prospects in his division. Sharpe has to be taken
seriously as he looks to avoid the prospect turned suspect label. Ennis
team has big things in mind and with a win, it probably won't be long
before he gets another chance to knock off another touted prospect in a
division log jammed with young, undefeated hopefuls.

![]() Max Alexander lt. Heavyweight 14 - 0 - 1 (2ko's) |
Max has been out of action since April with a broken hand but he will be
returning to the ring this month to take part in Season 3 of The
Contender which has by far the best line up of any season they have
produced. He will is be going up against a good mix of young prospects,
tough journeyman and fringe contenders. It will be interesting to see
how far the slick Camden fighter will go in this group and it is not far
fetched that he could win it considering the short rounds and his style
of moving and scoring points rather than trying to get a knockout. While
the fighting begins in August, the show won't be televised until early
September. Until then all I can say is best of luck, go win that money! Last Month Ranking # 5 |

Chucky Cavallo |
The
6"3' punching machine from Trenton NJ recently kept his undefeated
streak in tact with a one sided win live on Friday Night Fights over
trial horse Marlon Hayes. In his previous fight, The Italian Assassin
gunned down Dannon Svab in Fairless Hills with a 3rd round knockout that
was more like an aggravated assault. Cavallo is also getting a rep as a
guy who has been lighting it up in sparring sessions with some of the
best fighters around. It has definitely been showing in the ring lately
as he has been blowing out the opposition. Cavallo is slowly but surely
climbing up the Light Heavyweight ladder and next he is set to take on
former Canadian Light Heavyweight champ David Whittom on August 24th at
The New Alhambra. Last Month Ranking # 6 |

Kaseem "The Nightmare" Wilson
|
I am bending the rules here a bit but The Nightmare can't be denied.
Technically, he hasn't fought in Philly this year but his last fight was
a good one in Atlantic City on the under card of Gatti - Gomez where he
scored a unanimous decision victory. Wilson has also been getting his
feet wet outside the comfort zone of home fighting in the Pacific
Northwest and leaving a winner. Some say he is still learning on the job
but you can't argue with the results that he has produced so far. With
the log jam of talent of talent on the second half of this list, I have
to give the nod to the experience. For those who don't know, Wilson is a
fluid southpaw with some pop in his gloves. He makes his homecoming on
August 10th at The New Alhambra taking on "Classy" Chris Gray of Florida
who already pulled the rug from under an undefeated fighter in Philly
once before. Will lightning strike twice or will this be a nightmare
that scares Gray out of Philly for good? Last Month Ranking #unranked |

![]() "Hammerin" Hank Lundy Jr. Welterweight 8 - 0 (5ko's) |
Hammerin' Hank keeps banging out the wins against older journeyman who
have taken on some of the top names in the business. His last fight came
on August 2nd at The Armory taking a one sided decision over the very
experienced Andre Baker. Lundy has been very active in 2007, already
fighting 5 times and also getting some road work in fighting in Rhode
Island & Connecticut as well as Philly. If you haven't seen him yet, let
me tell you he means business in the ring and throws punches with bad
intentions behind them. He also likes to slip in a nice little behind
the back hook when the time is right. His next fight hasn't been
announced just yet but at his current rate you can bet that Hammer Time
is coming to a ring near you soon. Last Month Ranking # unranked |

![]() Dave Brunelli Heavyweight 8 - 2 (3ko's) |
After a slow start to 2007, Northeast Philly's Dave Brunelli returned to
the ring in June to take on Aaron Lyons at The Blue live on Comcast. You
might remember Lyons as being the only man to knockout punching machine
Joey Abell. Lyons came in the heavy favorite but Team Brunelli said from
day one that they were going to expose him and that's exactly what
happened as Brunelli picked him apart over 6 rounds. Brunelli followed
it up with a solid victory at The Armory on August 2nd scoring another
strong decision over a game Mike "The Hammer" Jones of Michigan. Now the
big ticket from Mayfair has become a hot name and some interesting match
ups could be made in the near future. Eddie Chambers has moved on so
let's get that PA state title back in circulation! Last Month Ranking # unranked |

![]() Tyric "Too Sweet" Robinson Jr. Welterweight 7- 1 (3ko's) |
Too Sweet has been a busy man lately, taking three fights in just
over a month and coming out on top every time. When he is on top of his
game, he is something to watch as he mixes fundamentally sound boxing
skills with a willingness to get into it and bang when needed. After an
uneven performance in June at the Armory where he scored a majority
decision win, we redeemed himself a week later pitching a shut out over
6 rounds in North Carolina. His latest fight came on August 2nd where he
showed it all off, picking apart a game Mike Mendez en route to a 4th
round stoppage in what could possibly be the finest performance of his
career. No upcoming fight has been announced just yet but it would be
nice to see a slight step up in the competition to see if the theory
that he needs a good fighter in front of him to be effective is correct. Last Month Ranking # unranked |

Latif Mundy Jr. Middleweight 5 - 0 (1ko) |
|
Latif Mundy's fights are starting to become worth the price of admission
alone and on the strength of two action packed fights, he gets the nod
in a very tight race for the final slot. His competition hasn't been the
highest caliber foes but they have been some back and forth battles.
Most recently, Mundy and Maurice Williams went the distance at The
Armory that was non stop two way action and a great way to start the
night. Mundy came out on top with a majority decision. Prior to that, in
Phoenixville he went toe to toe with the hard punching Manuel Guzman of
Lancaster when both fighters dished out the leather. Mundy took a
unanimous decision in this one although it was a lot closer than the
final result looks on paper. Mundy's next appearance is scheduled to
come on August 24th at The New Alhambra against an opponent not yet
named. Who ever it is better be able to with stand an attack because
Mundy likes to bring it.
