June 2007 Philly local circuit Pound for Pound Rankings

The summer is just about here and we are in full swing for this fight season. As usual, the names change but the action is always good. Since the last list come out in early April we have watched young hopefuls rise, old vets fall and others leave us to pursue bigger things. This month we have a tie at the top, a flip flop in Light Heavy rankings and a couple of new names who plan on making some real noise in the not so distant future.

For those who aren't familiar with this list, the rules are simple. The fighter has to fight on the Philly circuit and can't be beating nothing but bums. To those of you who want to beef about not having guys like Bernard Hopkins on the list, I have that covered too with the top 10 Philly born national pound for pound list.

Without further adu, here is the Philly Keith local top 10 pound for pound list for June 2007!

1. tie
Harry Joe Yorgey
jr. Middleweight
19 - 0 - 1 (9ko’s)
Harry made his 2007 return in late March and blew the doors off of James Wayka in Phoenixville. After that, Team Yorgey was eyeing up a showdown against Mike "No Joke" Stewart but negotiations broke down before a deal could be struck. So instead, Harry returned to The Blue on June 1st and showed his worth against a tough Edson Aguirre putting in a workman like effort over 8 rounds and winning a one sided unanimous decision. This could be the last we see of Harry in the neighborhood for a while as his team plans on moving him to the next level and finding a fight that will take him off of this p4p list and land him on a major sanctioning body contender sheet. Nothing has been announced just yet but the minute it does, you know who will be first to break the news. If this is his last time around here, I'd like to take this time to speak for all of us and say thanks for the great fights!

Last Month Ranking #1

1. tie
Chazz Witherspoon
Heavyweight
18 - 0 (12ko’s)
The Gentleman just keeps knocking guys out and on the strength of his last performance on the under card of Taylor - Spinks in Tennessee he has forced his way to the top of the rankings earning a tie for the number 1 slot. In that fight, Chazz handled his business and knocked out a fighter named Joe Stoufle who has made it his job to go in against only the top young heavys coming through the ranks. Prior to that, Chazz turned in a gem at the Blue Horizon scoring a 7th round KO over another tough out in Charles Davis. in a nut shell, he has made it clear that he is by far the best heavyweight fighting in our neck of the woods. It hasn't gone unnoticed either as he is drawing interest from some of the big name promoters in the business. Team Witherspoon plan on returning to action very soon, until then The Gentleman will back in the gym honing his skills that could take him to the top in the near future.

Last Month Ranking - #2

3.
Mike Jones
Welterweight
8 - 0 (8ko's)

So the word is out, there is a new knockout king in Philly and his name is Mike "Machine Gun" Jones. The last time he fought at The New Alhambra, half the hot dog line relinquished their spot because he was coming down the aisle and they didn't want to miss a second because Jones finishes quick. This North Philly power house has a right hand that hits like a wrecking ball. His most recent fight was in Vegas in May and wiped out a fighter with a 5 - 1 record  in the 1st. For those who haven't seen Jones live, let me tell you he is strictly business. He has steamrolled over journeyman and newbies, now the only questions are of stamina and if he can react to trouble since no one has lasted past the 3rd with him. His promoter Russell Peltz has just put together a diamond of a fight against the Lancaster bomber Doel Carrasquillo in what could be a fight of the year set for July 20th at The New Alhambra. This is further proof that Peltz is the best and with a win, Jones will show that he is among the best young welterweights in the world.

Last Month Rank - #4

4.
Derek Ennis

Jr. Middleweight
12 - 1 (9ko's)
It is rare that a fighter jumps into my list this high in the rankings but then again, there aren't many as good as Derek Ennis. He has always been on my radar but spent the majority of the past two years fighting on the road. He recently returned home after a tough loss on national TV in a fight that he was seconds away from winning. That return came in April at the Armory and Ennis busted up a tough enough customer in Edgar Reyes making him quit on the stool after the 3rd. He most recently fought that The Blue on June 1 against a guy who I would have a hard time wagering on in a bar fight let alone a boxing ring but hey, they guy was a last second replacement and Ennis wasted no time sending him back to the day job by scoring a 1st round knockout. Ennis has a good team behind him and overall is a big league talent. I hope to see more of him in the future.

5.
Chucky Cavallo
lt. Heavyweight
15 – 0 (6ko’s)
The "Italian Assassin" is a hot name these days and in his last fight in Lafayette Hill he destroyed a fighter named Dannon Svab. Svab leaked like an rusty air conditioner and didn;t make it out of the 3rd. The 6"3' Light Heavy from Trenton NJ is a punching machine and has been piling up the knockouts over the past 6 months. In his previous fight, he laid the wood on fighter named Mike Word who has pulled many of upset in his day, leaving this guy in no condition to finish the fight. Cavallo is also getting a rep as a guy who has been lighting it up in sparring sessions with some of the best fighters around. The hard work down at Mugsy's gym as been paying off and quite a few people want to see an Italian showdown against fellow pizan Chucky Mussachio of Wildwood. that would be a hell of a show, the crowd alone would be great. I still want to see a fight against Max Alexander!

Last Month Ranking # 6

6.
Max Alexander

lt. Heavyweight
15 - 0 (2ko's)
Max will be on the shelf most likely until late summer due to a broken hand suffered during his win at the Blue Horizon in April. It is a shame because the Camden Light Heavy was really building a name for himself, in particular due to a severe one sided beating be gave to Marty Lindquist during their grudge match in February. When in the ring, he is a rangy counter puncher who fights smart and picks his spots to do damage. The hand is healing and word is he is back in Liberties Gym doing light workouts as his hand gets back to full strength. Max seems to fight best when matched up against an aggressor and when he returns, I hope to seem him against someone who brings to watch Max pull out some of those slick moves he has become known for.

Last Month Ranking #5

7.
Doel Carrasquillo

Welterweight
10 - 4  (8ko's)
I can see the emails coming now but let me assure you, this is no IBF rankings scandal. I liked Doel since I first saw him at the Diablo Fight club in Kenzington fighting on a Joey Eye card and last month he got an honorable mention. When I first saw him, he wasn't all that impressive and he didn;t even win the fight (ended in a draw) but he left the impression that he is one tough dude. I saw him again soon after and a guy named Rami Ibraham gave him a handful. Then, Terry Nye took Doel under his wing and it was like a metamorphosis. He taught Doel a jab and before long this guy with the grimy street style actually started to box and began to knocking people out. They brought him in as an opponent for a 13 - 0 fight and Doel knocked him out. Then they brought in Tony Caldwell from Delaware who was 9 - 1 but guess what, Doel flattened him in the 2nd. Tony called it a fluke and was granted a rematch but it ended with the same result. Next up was Darren Fallen, a tough 10 - 3 fighter from Shulers Gym. It is one thing to beat a guy from Shulers, but to leave him unable to continue after 2? Unheard of. Most recently, Aaron Torres of the The Contender came through looking for an easy win but didn't make it past 3. Up next is Mike Jones, a fight I asked Terry Nye about 6 months ago and one he said they look forward to. the time has come and this fight is even money. Buy your ticket now!

8.
Isaac Suarez
Featherweight
5 - 0 (2ko's)

The Lancaster, PA based featherweight cracked the rankings last month and followed up with another impressive performance scoring a 5th round knockout against Charles Jones of North Carolina. The fight before that was a one sided stomping of Murkel Muhammed at the Armory. His next fight is scheduled for June 8th at the Armory but word is that it's getting hard to find someone to fight the 20 year rumbler. When in action, Suarez is a fierce body puncher who stays on the attack. Like mentioned before, the featherweights division is starting to swell with talent in this region and Isaac wants to take them all on. It will probably be a little bit of time before these guys do start squaring off but when it does, I assure you it will have headliner status.

Last Month Ranking # 10

9.
Elad Schmouel
Jr. Welterweight
17 - 1 (8ko's)
Don Elbaum will tell you with a straight face that this kid is a sure shot title contender in a few years. I'd like to see him fight a guy with more than 3 wins for once before that statement gets my stamp of approval. With that being said, "The Kosher Pitbull" can rumble and usually gives the crowd reason to cheer and boo. On of the best fights of the year so far was Elad vs. Ryan Belasco at the Blue where early got dropped early and was on his way to starchville. He shook it off and convincingly won the next three rounds. The place went nuts and he was carried off in his teams shoulders. Next time out facing a solid journeyman Jason Jordan, and put in another solid effort in getting a unanimous decision win. It was a bit tougher than expected but still a good show. You can probably count on him fighting at the Blue in September, hopefully against someone who can test that 17 win record.

Last Month Ranking # 8

10.

"Hammerin" Hank Lundy

Lightweight

6 - 0 (4ko's)

South Philly's Hammerin' Hank passed the 5 fight limit and earns a slot on the pound for pound list on the strength of a solid performance against Reggie Sanders at The Blue on June 1st. Even though his opponent had an awful record, the guy lasted with some of the top names in the business and was a pretty slick fighter in the ring. That didn't stop Lundy from giving it his all. The former high school football star has been keeping busy lately and prior to this he fought in RI which was televised on Comcast and scored a 2nd round knockout on national TV. He returned to Philly in January and after a shaky start where he was actually knocked down, he got up and destroyed the man in front of him. People are starting to talk about how he fights in the ring. He is one of those guys who has bad intentions behind every punch. This fiery lightweight is just getting started, before long don't be surprised if you see him hovering around the top of this list.

Honorable mentions – Dave Brunelli, Gee Culmer, Latif Mundy, LaJuan Simon, Jules Blackwell, Gabe Rosado, Simon O'Donnell, Levon Warner, Oaktree Brown.
